127th Street bridge over Cal Sag repairs continues

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that a project to repair the 127th Street (Illinois 83) bridge over the Cal Sag Channel, in Crestwood and Alsip, will continue into summer 2027 as additional time is needed to complete the work.

The majority of the project is now anticipated to be complete and the bridge reopened next summer. The detour routing traffic to Cicero Avenue (Illinois 50) and Cal Sag Road (Illinois 83) will remain in place until then.

The bridge initially closed this past April for repairs. While construction was underway, the need for unforeseen additional repairs was discovered, including replacement of additional structural steel under the bridge.

The $18 million project is repairing the bridge deck, concrete approaches and substructure, replacing structural steel, expansion joints, steel beams and installing a new concrete deck overlay along with new lighting, guardrail, painting and drainage improvements. New wider sidewalks will be constructed on both sides of the bridge with a multi-use path on the south side to connect with the Calumet River Trail.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in all work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
