Addison Street over Kennedy reopening today

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that repairs to the Addison Street bridge over the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94), in Chicago, will be completed today, weather permitting, with all lanes reopening this afternoon. The project originally was scheduled to wrap up in September, but construction was accelerated to minimize impacts to local traffic during the ongoing Kennedy Expressway rehabilitation.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation and patience during construction,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi. “We are especially proud to finish this project ahead of schedule so you can experience the benefits of an improved Addison Street as quickly as possible.”

To complete permanent lane striping and other minor work, intermittent daytime lane closures will be required at times over the next two weeks.

The $1.2 million project consisted of repairing the bridge deck and approaches, replacing expansion joints, installing a new deck overlay, resurfacing and constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps.

To complete the work, Addison Street was reduced from two lanes to one in each direction, with turning restrictions entering and leaving the expressway, which is under construction as part of a separate $169 million project to rehabilitate pavement and bridges from the Edens Expressway (I-94) junction to Ohio Street.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Five of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges and 986 additional safety improvements.
