Bridge painting on Interstate 72 in Pike and Scott Counties begin April 1
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that four bridges along Interstate 72 will be painted over the next four months. Those bridges include the 150th Street overpass in Pike County just over a mile east of the I-172 interchange, the U.S. 54/Illinois 107 overpass and the I-72 bridges over Illinois 100.
The 150th Street overpass is scheduled to be the first bridge completed followed by the U.S. 54/Illinois 107 bridge. The I-72 bridges will be painted after the other two bridges are completed. Lane closures will be necessary to complete the painting. Message boards, signs and barrels will be used to direct traffic. Benefits from this project include protecting the bridges from the elements and corrosion which will preserve the lifespan of the bridges.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
