Building demolition project along Fayette Avenue in Effingham underway

EFFINGHAM – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the building demolition project along Fayette Avenue (U.S. 40) in Effingham is underway. The buildings to be removed are on the south side of Fayette Avenue from Fifth Street east to Willow Street. ​ ​

Periodic lane closures will be needed for some of the work. Arrow boards, barrels and signs will be in place to guide motorists through the work zone. Building demolition is expected to be completed by mid-November.

This work is part of the larger $56 million Fayette Avenue improvement project. Work to reconstruct and expand Fayette Avenue from Banker Street to Long Street is expected to begin in 2027. ​ Improvements to Fayette Avenue from Illini Street to Walnut Avenue were completed in 2025.

Motorists are encouraged to use other routes to avoid the area and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and obey the posted speed limits.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
