Dixie Highway improvements in Homewood begin June 1

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that an improvement project on Dixie Highway from Harwood Avenue to north of Sycamore Drive, in Homewood, will begin, weather permitting, Monday, June 1.

The $7.5 million project involves replacing the existing storm sewer and drainage structures on Dixie Highway under the Canadian National railroad viaduct, helping to eliminate area flooding. The project also includes resurfacing and constructing new ADA compliant sidewalk ramps.

The work will initially require daily lane closures to establish the work zone. Beginning the week of June 8, Dixie Highway will be closed in both directions at the railroad viaduct, between Harwood Avenue and Sycamore Drive, for approximately three months. A detour will direct traffic to 175th Street, Governors Highway and 183rd Street.

Dixie Highway then reopens for westbound traffic through the viaduct and northbound to Sycamore Drive. Eastbound traffic will continue to be detoured through the end of construction, anticipated to be completed in December.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
