Eastbound Interstate 72 closure begins tonight

CHAMPAIGN – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that closure of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 72 at the I-57 interchange in Champaign will begin in the early morning of Oct. 22.

The closure is necessary for repairs and to prepare the eastbound lanes to carry traffic as part of a bridge project slated for next spring and will last a week. A detour utilizing southbound I-57 at the Curtis Road interchange will be posted.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
