11/7 UPDATE/Corrected: The work and closure has been postponed until, weather permitting, Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Foster Avenue bridge over the Kennedy to close Nov. 6

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that a project to replace the bridge carrying Foster Avenue over the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90), in Chicago, will begin, weather permitting, Wednesday, Nov. 6.

To complete the work, Foster Avenue will be closed at the bridge. A detour will direct traffic to Nagle, Bryn Mawr, Milwaukee and Central avenues. Pedestrians and bicyclists should follow the posted detours. The Foster Avenue ramps to and from the Kennedy will remain open during the first phase of construction. In early spring, the westbound Foster Avenue ramp to outbound Kennedy will be closed for approximately three to four months. The public should also expect various overnight lane closures on the Kennedy at Foster Avenue during construction.

The $25.2 million project consists of replacing the existing bridge, installing new LED lighting, modernizing traffic signals, constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and implementing drainage improvements.

The project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Five of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges and 986 additional safety improvements.
