Harlem Avenue, 95^th Street ramp closures next weekend

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the bridges carrying Harlem Avenue (Illinois 43) over 95^th Street (U.S. 12/20) in Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge and Oak Lawn, stage changes and ramp closures along with intermittent lane closures on northbound Harlem Avenue between 92^nd and 99^th Place are scheduled to take place on Harlem Avenue and 95^th Street next weekend beginning, weather permitting, Friday, April 17. ​

Starting at 6 p.m. Friday the following ramps will be closed: ​

Detour: Southwest Highway (east), Ridgeland Road (north) to 95^th Street.

Detour: 95^th Street (east), Cicero Avenue (Illinois 50) north, 87^th Street (west) to Harlem Avenue.

Detour: Harlem Avenue (north), 87^th Street (west), Roberts Road (south) to 95^th Street.

Detour: 95^th Street (west), Roberts Road (north), 87^th Street (east) to Harlem Avenue.

By 5 a.m. Monday, April 20, the ramps and lanes that were closed will reopen and a new traffic pattern will be in place. In the new configuration, Harlem Avenue will remain two lanes in each direction and the northbound lanes will be shifted slightly to the right onto the reconstructed bridge. ​

Additionally, ramp traffic will be redirected to the rebuilt northbound Harlem Avenue to westbound 95^th Street and the eastbound 95^th Street to northbound Harlem Avenue ramps.

The $43.3 million project will reconstruct and resurface Harlem Avenue over 95^th Street between 92^nd and 99^th Place and the Harlem Avenue/95^th Street interchange, improve lighting and drainage, modernize traffic signals and construct new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. The project also includes rehabilitating the Harlem Avenue bridges over the CSX railroad and over 95^th Street along with the eastbound 95^th Street elevated ramp to southbound Harlem Avenue outer connector ramp over the CSX railroad. Additionally, 95^th Street from Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) to New England Avenue will be resurfaced and new storm sewers installed. ​ ​

The overall project is anticipated to be completed in late 2026. ​ ​

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
