Henrietta Street/Jefferson Avenue intersection to partially open July 12

EFFINGHAM – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the Henrietta Street/Jefferson Avenue intersection will partially open on Saturday, July 12. Work will continue on Henrietta Street to construct the center turn lanes and raised median between Fayette Avenue and Jefferson Avenue. Motorists on Henrietta Street will use the newly constructed outside lanes with one lane open in each direction.

Traffic traveling on Henrietta Street will be prohibited from making left turns at the Jefferson Street intersection. Motorists on Jefferson Avenue will only be able to turn right onto Henrietta Street. Advance signing and barrels will be used to direct traffic along Henrietta Street and Jefferson Avenue.

Started in 2023, the Fayette Avenue project consists of widening the existing four lanes from Illini Drive to Walnut Street and adding a middle turn lane from Henrietta Street to Walnut Street. Additional elements include upgrading storm sewers, constructing a multiuse path, adding ADA-compliant sidewalks, modernizing traffic signals, installing new lighting, and improving intersections and side streets. The improved Fayette Avenue will help reduce congestion along a busy commercial corridor, increase transportation options for residents and enhance local quality of life. This project is expected to be completed this summer.

Motorists can expect delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid the area if possible.
