I-57 at Illinois 54 interchange to close overnight Dec. 16-18
ONARGA – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, Interstate 57 at the Illinois 54 interchange in Onarga will be closed for three consecutive nights starting Tuesday, Dec. 16. The closure is necessary to demolish a portion of the Illinois 54 bridge deck over I-57.
The closures will begin at 6 p.m. each night and end at 6 a.m. the following morning. Traffic will be detoured off and onto I-57 using the exit and entrance ramps at Illinois 54. Illinois 54 will be open to one lane in each direction on the bridge and traffic at the intersections will be controlled by flaggers.
The work is part of a $5 million project to replace the Illinois 54 bridge deck over I-57. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
