I-57 closure for demolition of Stiritz Road bridge Oct. 5

CARBONDALE – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that both directions of Interstate 57 will be closed between exit 65 and exit 59 in Williamson and Franklin counties starting at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.

The closure is necessary to demolish the bridge carrying Stiritz Road over I-57 just north of Johnston City.

A marked detour will be in place to guide northbound and southbound traffic around the work zone between exit 65 and exit 59. The detour will utilize Illinois 37 for both directions.

Flaggers, message boards, and traffic control devices will inform and direct motorists.

All lanes are scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and all detour signs prior to the work zone, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
