I-70 bridge project east of the Marshall interchange is underway

EFFINGHAM – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the reconstruction of the westbound bridge on Interstate 70 about 2.5 miles east of the Marshall interchange is underway.

The use of crossovers will be necessary for the $8.2 million project. Westbound I-70 traffic will cross over in the median and use the eastbound passing lane to travel through the work zone. Eastbound I-70 traffic will use the eastbound driving lane traveling through the work zone. A barrier wall will be in place between the east- and westbound traffic through the work zone.

During the reconstruction of the westbound bridge, one lane of traffic will remain open in both directions on I-70 with barrels, message boards and arrow boards directing traffic onto the crossovers and through the work zone. Traffic should be back in its normal lanes by August, with the project wrapping up in September. The eastbound bridge will be completed in 2027. This project will not impact access to the Cumberland Road Rest Area.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
