I-80 at I-55 interchange ramp changes begin July 1

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild the Interstate 80 bridges over Interstate 55, in Joliet, Channahon and Shorewood, ramp changes are scheduled to take place beginning, weather permitting, Wednesday, July 1.

The eastbound I-80 ramp to northbound I-55 will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 1. The ramp closed last December as part of the larger I-80 mainline and interchange reconstruction.

Starting Tuesday, July 7, the ramp from northbound I-55 to westbound I-80 and the ramp from westbound I-80 to southbound I-55 will close. Detours listed below:

  • Northbound I-55 to westbound I-80: Continue north on I-55, exit northbound Illinois 59. Reenter southbound I-55 to westbound I-80.
  • Westbound I-80 to southbound I-55: Continue west on I-80, exit southbound Ridge Road. Reenter eastbound I-80 to southbound I-55.

All scheduled work is subject to change due to multiple factors, including inclement weather. In that event, schedules will be updated and shared with the public.

Additionally, the ramp from southbound Interstate 55 to eastbound Interstate 80 will remain closed, anticipated to reopen later this fall.

As the I-80 reconstruction continues, the public should continue to expect lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
