To facilitate the work zone changes, overnight lane closures are scheduled to take place over two nights.
Monday, March 24
- Ramp closures
- Starting at 8 p.m. Monday, the southbound I-55 ramp to eastbound I-80 will close, anticipated to reopen in fall 2026.
- A posted detour will direct traffic to continue southbound I-55 to U.S. 6, exit U.S. 6 east, reenter I-55 (northbound) to exit eastbound I-80.
- At the same time, the northbound I-55 ramp to westbound I-80 also will close, anticipated to reopen later this fall.
- A posted detour will direct traffic to continue northbound I-55, exit northbound Illinois 59 and reenter I-55 (southbound) to westbound I-80.
- Starting at 8 p.m. Monday, the southbound I-55 ramp to eastbound I-80 will close, anticipated to reopen in fall 2026.
Tuesday, March 25
- Eastbound I-80
- Starting at 8 p.m., eastbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane from River Road to east of Interstate 55.
- Lanes that were closed overnight will reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday, when the new traffic pattern will be in place.
- In the new configuration, eastbound I-80 will be shifted slightly to the right and the shoulders will be closed.
Thursday, March 27
- Westbound I-80
- Starting at 8 p.m., westbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane from east of I-55 to River Road.
- Lanes that were closed overnight will reopen by 6 a.m. Friday, when the new traffic pattern will be in place.
- In the new configuration, westbound I-80 will be shifted slightly to the right and the shoulders will be closed.
The new configuration will allow work to continue on the mainline lanes and is estimated to remain in place through the fall.
The public should continue to expect lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays and to allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
