MADISON β The Illinois Department of Transportation is continuing multiple coordinated improvements along the Interstate 55/70 corridor in St. Clair County to improve safety, mobility and road conditions.

βBeginning Monday, May 18, lane closures will be in place at the following locations to allow for pavement and structure repairs.

βEastbound I-55/70
βBetween Exchange Avenue and Black Lane, traffic will be reduced to:
ββ’ Two lanes during peak hours (approximately 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
ββ’ One or two lanes during off-peak hours, as needed
ββ
βWestbound I-55/70
βBetween Illinois 203 and I-255, traffic will be reduced to:
ββ’ Two lanes during peak hours (approximately 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.)
ββ’ One or two lanes during off-peak hours, as needed
Ramp Closure
βBeginning Monday, May 18, the southbound I-255 to westbound I-55/70 ramp will be reduced to one lane.

βThese closures are required to complete pavement and structure repairs and will be in place through summer 2027, weather permitting. Additional traffic impacts will be announced in advance as work progresses.

βMotorists should expect significant delays, particularly during peak travel periods, and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible. Drivers are reminded to slow down, remain alert for changing conditions, obey all construction signage, and avoid distractions in work zones.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
