Ontario Street ramps to outbound Kennedy to close Sunday night
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding the public that as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94) from the Edens Expressway (I-94) junction to Ohio Street, the westbound Ontario Street ramps to access the outbound Kennedy are scheduled to close by 11 p.m., weather permitting, Sunday, Oct. 12.
To facilitate the ramp closures, starting at 11 p.m. Sunday, the westbound Ontario Street feeder ramp will be fully closed from Orleans Street to the Kennedy. By 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, the Ontario Street feeder will reopen for access to southbound Kennedy to the Dan Ryan Expressway only. The westbound Ontario Street ramps to access the outbound Kennedy (express and local lanes) will remain closed for approximately two weeks.
The closures are necessary to safely complete repairs and pavement patching. The work is subject to change due to multiple factors, including inclement weather.
Current ramp closures:
- Outbound Kennedy to Division Street, anticipated to reopen the week of Oct. 13.
- Outbound Kennedy to Wilson Avenue, anticipated to reopen the week of Oct. 20.
The public should follow the posted detours.

Additionally, work continues through next summer on the Ohio and Ontario Street feeder ramps, an unrelated, project. Two lanes are open in each direction between Orleans Street and the Kennedy. Click here for more information.
The public should expect significant delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
Throughout construction, traveling during non-peak hours, taking alternate routes and utilizing public transportation, including the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line and Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line, as well as Pace, are recommended.
