Outbound Kennedy overnight lane closures near Foster Avenue
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild the bridge carrying Foster Avenue over the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90), in Chicago, overnight lane closures are scheduled to take place, weather permitting, Friday, June 26.
Starting at 9 p.m., the outbound Kennedy will gradually be reduced to one outbound lane near Foster Avenue. The lanes that were closed overnight will reopen by 10 a.m. Saturday. The inbound Kennedy will not be impacted.
The closures are necessary to safely construct the concrete center pier next to the expressway and the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line.
Heavy congestion is anticipated. Drivers heading to O’Hare International Airport should consider alternative routes to avoid the area.
Foster Avenue continues to be closed at the bridge with a detour directing traffic to Nagel, Bryn Mawr, Milwaukee and Central avenues. Pedestrians and bicyclists should continue to follow the posted detours. The westbound Foster Avenue ramp to the outbound Kennedy also remains closed through August. The other Foster Avenue ramps to and from the Kennedy are open.
To complete the work and remove the existing center pier, one additional overnight lane closure will be scheduled to take place. Details and impacts to traffic will be shared in advance, closer to the closure dates.
The $25.2 million project is replacing the existing bridge, installing new LED lighting, modernizing traffic signals, constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and implementing drainage improvements. The overall project is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
