Overnight closure of US 51 set for Sept. 14

CAIRO – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that U.S. 51 near Cairo Junior/Senior High School in Alexander County will be closed starting at 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14.

The closure is necessary to remove an old, unused railroad bridge over the highway near Union Street and the school.

The road is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and all construction signs prior to the work zone, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
