CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the bridges carrying Harlem Avenue (Illinois 43) over 95th Street (U.S. 12/20), in Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge and Oak Lawn, overnight lane closures, accompanied by 15-minute full traffic stops, are scheduled to take place on 95th Street and on Harlem Avenue over three consecutive nights beginning, weather permitting, Monday, May 4. The closures are necessary to safely remove steel beams from the existing bridge structure over the road.
To complete the work, the public should expect various overnight lane closures in both directions of 95th Street, between 76th and Oak Park avenues and on southbound Harlem Avenue, between 92nd Place and 95th Street, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Wednesday, May 6, with full stops for no longer than 15 minutes at a time starting at 9 p.m. each night. The work is anticipated to be completed by 6 a.m. Thursday, May 7. \u200b \u200b
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
The $43.3 million project will reconstruct and resurface Harlem Avenue over 95th Street between 92nd and 99th Place and the Harlem Avenue/95th Street interchange, improve lighting and drainage, modernize traffic signals and construct new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. The project also includes rehabilitating the Harlem Avenue bridges over the CSX railroad and over 95th Street along with the eastbound 95th Street elevated ramp to southbound Harlem Avenue outer connector ramp over the CSX railroad. Additionally, 95th Street from Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) to New England Avenue will be resurfaced and new storm sewers installed. \u200b \u200b
The overall project is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year. \u200b \u200b
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
