Rebuilding northern Cook County: Construction season brings another round of major improvements to region

CHICAGO – Rebuild Illinois is continuing to improve mobility, safety and quality of life in northern Cook County, with the Illinois Department of Transportation delivering multiple major projects this construction season. Made possible by Gov. JB Pritzker’s historic capital program, six projects combined represent a total investment of $271.7 million, creating and maintaining good-paying jobs throughout the region. ​ ​

“The historic Rebuild Illinois program continues to transform our infrastructure and enhance key economic corridors across the state,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Our ambitious capital program is putting Illinoisans to work as we improve regional transportation systems, encourage new economic activity and build a better future for all of Illinois.” ​ ​

Of the six major projects in the northern Cook County area, two are scheduled to be completed in 2026, with the remaining four projects completed between 2027-2028.

“Illinois residents rely on modernized, efficient infrastructure to get to work on time, move throughout the community and keep themselves and their family safe,” said Assistant Senate Majority Leader Laura Murphy (D-Des Plaines). “The projects coming to Northern Cook County invest in the 28th District community, eventually creating fewer disruptions for drivers and improving road quality.” ​ ​ ​

“These investments in our roads and bridges are also investments in the communities that rely on them every day,” said Senate Majority Caucus Whip Julie Morrison (D-Lake Forest). “I’m proud to see this continued progress in strengthening the infrastructure and safety of our transportation network, allowing people to get where they need go with reliability and efficiency.”

“This announcement is good news for every resident of the 54th District who travels our roads and bridges,” said state Rep. Mary Beth Canty (D-Arlington Heights). “These Rebuild Illinois investments mean safer and more reliable travel for our families, our commuters and our local businesses. I want to thank Gov. Pritzker and IDOT for making sure the northwest suburbs are part of this program. I will keep working to see these projects delivered on time.” ​

“Illinois 53 is critical to Rolling Meadows residents and businesses,” said Rolling Meadows Mayor Lara Sanoica. “As the premier highway connecting Lake and Cook counties to interstates I-90 and I-290 and O’Hare International Airport, modernizing Illinois 53 is the kind of smart investment that will keep our local economies strong and benefit all of Illinois.”

Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing a total of $33.2 billion over six years into the state’s aging transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history, but also the first that touches all modes of transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. ​ ​ ​ ​

Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide on 24,498 miles of highways, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
