Resurfacings in Springfield top $25 million in 2025

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that five major resurfacing projects were completed in Springfield in 2025, improving safety and reliability along several key routes in the capital city. The projects were made possible Gov. JB Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program.

More than $25 million was invested along approximately 9 miles:

  • Sixth Street from Spruce Street to Ash Street, $5.3 million.
  • North Dirksen Parkway (Illinois 29) from North Peoria Road to Northfield Drive, $5.5 million.
  • Veterans Parkway (Illinois 4) from Prairie Crossing Drive to Greenbriar Drive, $8.9 million.
  • Wabash Avenue from Robbins Road to MacArthur Boulevard, $4.9 million.
  • Ninth Street from Madison Street to Sangamon Avenue, $1.8 million.

The Sixth Street, North Dirksen Parkway and Veterans Parkway projects were completed in the summer. Wabash Avenue and Ninth Street were wrapped up this fall. The Ninth Street project was advanced to accommodate for the centennial celebration of Route 66 in 2026

For the 2025 construction season, IDOT completed 66 projects valued at more than $250 million in its District 6, which covers Adams, Brown, Cass, Christian, Hancock, Logan, Macoupin, Mason, Menard, Montgomery, Morgan, Pike, Sangamon, Schuyler and Scott counties. In addition to resurfacings, the work consisted of road reconstructions, bridge replacements and repairs as well as various maintenance projects.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
