Rollin’ out the Orange Barrels: IDOT, Peoria Chiefs team up to promote work zone safety at the ol’ ballgame
PEORIA – The Illinois Department of Transportation is partnering with the Peoria Chiefs to spotlight the “It's Not a Game” campaign during the Orange Barrels-themed games this weekend, highlighted by a street fair on Saturday with fun and games focused on work zone safety.
“Combining America’s favorite pastime with our mission to eliminate all crashes on Illinois roads: It’s the perfect double play,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “We invite you to join us this weekend by coming out to root for the home team, while learning about projects in the Peoria area and what you can do to keep you and your family safe this construction season.”
On Saturday, between 3 and 7 p.m., IDOT, the Peoria Chiefs and the city of Peoria will host a free, family-friendly street fair on Oak Street outside Dozer Park. The event aims to engage fans and community members in discussions about work zone safety and other traffic safety initiatives. Attendees can ask questions, pick up educational materials and participate in interactive activities focused on safe driving in work zones.
The Peoria Chiefs first adopted the Orange Barrels name and logo for a handful of games in 2020 when construction began on the Murray Baker Bridge as a fun way to salute hard-working construction workers.
“We are proud to partner with IDOT to promote road safety at our Orange Barrels-themed game nights,” said Peoria Chiefs General Manager Jason Mott. “The safety of our community and our fans is of utmost importance. We are excited to help raise awareness about work zone safety through this special event.”
As construction season continues, the public is urged to stay alert, follow traffic laws, pay attention to signs and instructions in work zones to protect the safety of workers, fellow drivers and passengers. Remember, when it comes to work zone safety, “It's Not a Game.” For more information about the “It's Not a Game” campaign, please visit www.itsnotagameillinois.com.
