Southbound I-57 closure begins May 14

CARBONDALE – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that southbound Interstate 57 between exit 30 and exit 45 in Williamson and Union counties will close to all traffic at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, for emergency guardrail and pavement repairs.

A posted detour will direct southbound I-57 traffic to eastbound Interstate 24, just south of Marion. Northbound I-57 traffic will remain open.

The repairs are expected to be completed the following morning, and all lanes reopened by 7 a.m. Thursday, May 15.

Motorists can expect delays and should consider alternative routes to avoid the area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and message boards in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
