Southbound I-57 closure begins Oct. 14

CARBONDALE – The Illinois Department of Transportation today announced that southbound Interstate 57 will be closed to traffic between exit 40 and exit 45 in Williamson and Johnson counties beginning at 7 p.m. today, Oct. 14, for emergency pavement repairs.

A posted detour will direct southbound I-57 traffic to eastbound Interstate 24 to exit 16, just south of Marion. Northbound I-57 traffic will remain open.

The repairs are expected to be completed the following morning, and all lanes reopened by 12 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs in work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
