Stop sign installation in Winnebago and Stephenson counties begins May 4

DIXON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, stop sign installation at intersections in Winnebago and Stephenson counties will begin on Monday, May 4. The intersections are located at Springfield Avenue and Safford Road in Rockford, and Illinois 75 and Rock City Road in Rock City.

Work will convert both intersections into four-way stops. Currently, traffic on Safford Road must stop at Springfield Avenue, and traffic on Rock City Road must stop at Illinois 75. Other features being installed at these intersections include stop ahead signs, advance flashing beacons and pavement markings.

The project is expected to be completed by Memorial Day. There will be message boards near each intersection for a week reminding motorists of the stop sign changes.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zone areas, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation.
