U.S. 150 McClugage Bridge closes for demolition on March 27

First of six scheduled events using explosives to remove
the old eastbound structure

PEORIA – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that U.S. 150 (War Memorial Drive) McClugage Bridge and surrounding roads will close just before 10 a.m. on March 27 as demolition continues on the old eastbound McClugage Bridge. The closure is expected to last up to one hour.

The first of six planned blasts over the next three months will use explosives to sever steel to remove girders on the east side of the bridge, making room for the eventual removal of the remainder of the bridge. Traffic will be routed from U.S. 150 at interchange ramps and remain continuously moving. Stopping on U.S. 150 will not be permitted. Illinois 29 (Adams Street) will remain open in both directions.

During the bridge demolition events, the following will be closed to all traffic:

  • Eastbound U.S. 150 from Illinois 29 (Adams Street) to Illinois 116
  • Westbound U.S. 150 from Illinois 116 to Illinois 29 (Adams Street)
  • Ramps from Illinois 116 to westbound U.S. 150
  • Lorentz Avenue from Illinois 29 (Adams Street) to the Illinois River

Anyone who wants to view the events are reminded that a security perimeter around the blast area will be in effect on land and in the water. Pedestrians are also asked to avoid trespassing on private property without the property owner’s’ permission.

Drones will be used as a mechanism to verify a safe and successful detonation of the explosives. Civilian drones will be required to maintain 1,000 feet north of the bridge and fly in excess of 300 feet above the ground. Any incursions into this area may cause postponement of the blast, with drown owners potentially liable for delays to the contractor.
