U.S. 20 in Jo Daviess County closes April 13
Closure to aid in $31.6 million reconstruction project
STOCKTON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, there will be a 12-day closure of U.S. 20 between the west limits of Stockton and Logemann Road in Jo Daviess County starting Monday, April 13.
The closure is necessary to expedite a $31.6 million road improvement project and minimize any potential traffic disruptions in the work zone over the next two years. Workers will remove the existing culverts in the area and install 10 new culverts. Traffic will follow a marked detour of Illinois 78, U.S. 52/Illinois 64 and Illinois 84.
All north-south roads will remain open through U.S. 20 during the closure. Those roads include Logemann Road, Park Street/Rush Street, Canyon Park Road, Massbach Road/Funston Road and Mapes Road/Golf Road. There will be access for local traffic for residents and businesses in this affected corridor during the closure, which is expected to end Friday, April 24.
This project includes the construction of a new alignment of U.S. 20 north of the current road that will include a truck climbing lane and a new bridge over Rush Creek. All of the existing road will be reconstructed along the 4-mile corridor and will include left turn lanes and paved shoulders.
Work in 2026 will mainly be off the existing road while construction in 2027 will be done in sections, with one lane of traffic open and controlled by temporary signals. Some side roads will be closed for reconstruction during the project, which is anticipated to be completed in November 2027.
Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zone areas, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
