U.S. 20 in Jo Daviess County reopens

12-day closure aided in $31.6 million reconstruction project

STOCKTON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that U.S. 20 between the west limits of Stockton and Logemann Road in Jo Daviess County is open following a 12-day closure.

Since the road closed on April 13, workers removed the existing culverts in the area and installed 10 new culverts. The closure was necessary to expedite a $31.6 million road improvement project and minimize any potential traffic disruptions in the work zone over the next two years. With no traffic on U.S. 20, workers were able to perform additional work that would have been subject to multiple daily lane closures such as grading and constructing a barrier wall as part of the new Rush Creek bridge.

This project includes the construction of a new alignment of U.S. 20 north of the current road that will include a truck cl

imbing lane and a new bridge over Rush Creek. All of the existing road will be reconstructed along the 4-mile corridor and will include left turn lanes and paved shoulders.

Work in 2026 will mainly be off the existing road and will concentrate on the new alignments at the west and east ends of the project area. Construction in 2027 will be done in sections between Mapes/Golf Roads and Canyon Park/Massbach Roads with one lane of traffic open and controlled by temporary signals. Some side roads will be closed for reconstruction during the project, which is anticipated to be completed in November 2027.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zone areas, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
