Virtual public meeting April 9 for proposed improvements on U.S. 20 in Winnebago County

WINNEBAGO COUNTY – The Illinois Department of Transportation will host a virtual public meeting for proposed improvements on U.S. 20 in Winnebago County at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 9. The public can register for the meeting at https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8W2RG8JFR5KDnoRmhrNexA#/registration.

The project includes improvements to 8 miles of U.S. 20 from Pecatonica Road to Falconer Road near the villages of Pecatonica and Winnebago. It will address aging pavement and infrastructure, improve safety and operations, and maintain reliable regional travel for local communities, agriculture and freight movement on a road carrying 14,700 vehicles daily.

Also, safety improvements being evaluated include the potential implementation of Restricted Crossing U-Turn intersections at Hoisington Road and Conger Road. A RCUT is an alternative intersection design that improves safety by reducing the most severe types of crashes. At an RCUT intersection, side-street traffic is restricted from crossing the highway or turning left directly onto it. Instead, drivers turn right onto the highway and then make a U-turn at a designated median opening to travel in the desired direction. This design significantly reduces conflict points and has been shown to improve safety and traffic flow on high-speed roads.

At the meeting, the project team will present a project overview, discuss improvements and receive public feedback. The meeting will conclude with a question-and-answer session with IDOT representatives and the project team.

Meeting materials and a recording of the public meeting will be posted to the project website at https://idot.illinois.gov/programs-and-projects/featured-projects/winnebago-county--u-s--20-from-pecatonica-to-falconer-road.html. Comments and questions are encouraged and can be submitted through the website.
