Weekend closure of Old US 51 in Union County begins Sept. 18

CARBONDALE – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that a culvert replacement in Union County will require a weekend closure of Old U.S. 51 in both directions at the north limits of Cobden beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, weather permitting.

A posted detour utilizing U.S. 51, Illinois 146 and Illinois 127 will be in place to safely guide motorists around the closure.

The work is expected to be completed by 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21. Following the weekend closure, temporary signals will control one lane of traffic through the work zone.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and all detour signs prior to the work zone, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
