Baxter ramp to northbound I-39 is closed

DIXON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the ramp from Baxter Road to northbound Interstate 39 in Winnebago County is closed to all traffic. The closure is necessary to deter vehicles weighing over 20 tons gross from crossing the Kishwaukee River bridge just north of the Baxter Road interchange. Traffic wishing to continue on northbound I-39 can detour using Baxter Road, Illinois 251 and Bypass U.S. 20.

Out of an abundance of caution, the northbound I-39 Kishwaukee River bridge has been restricted to a vehicle weight limit of 20 tons gross since a structural inspection of the bridge in late July identified some critical issues requiring repair. Efforts to begin the needed repairs are underway.

To ensure the safety of the traveling public and prevent further damage to the structure, the right lane of the bridge has been closed to traffic. Also, loads over 20 tons gross must exit at the Illinois 72 interchange (exit 111) and detour using westbound Illinois 72, northbound Illinois 251 and eastbound Bypass U.S. 20 to travel on northbound I-39.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zone, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
