Halsted Street bridge rehab begins March 17
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that rehabilitation of the bridges carrying Halsted Street (Illinois 1) over the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, north of 142nd Street and over the CSX Railroad, north of 138th Street, in Riverdale, will begin, weather permitting, Monday, March 17.
To complete the work, Halsted Street will be reduced from two to one lane in both directions from south of 129th Place to 142nd Street, with lane widths reduced to 9 feet 5 inches. Motorists also should expect various lane shifts on both sides of Halsted Street approaching both structures.
The $8.6 million project consists of repairing the decks and approaches, replacing expansion joints and structural steel, installing a new deck overlay, guardrail and resurfacing. The existing sidewalk on the west side of the bridge over the CSX Railroad will be widened to include a multiuse path to connect with the local system of trails. Work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Five of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges and 986 additional safety improvements.
