Help wanted: Snowplow drivers for the IDOT team

SPRINGFIELD – Looking for extra income and a possible leg up on full-time employment? The Illinois Department of Transportation is taking applications for seasonal positions to help with snow-and-ice removal and other maintenance duties throughout the state as part of the annual Snowbird program.

“Snowbirds play a critical role in keeping Illinois moving and the public safe during winter,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi. “If you’re interested in a good-paying job that can open the door to permanent work and a career at IDOT, get your application in today!”

Both full-time temporary and hourly on-call positions are being filled to help maintain more than 45,000 lane miles statewide during winter. Snowbirds are required to promptly respond to emerging weather situations for snow-and-ice removal and be ready to work in emergency conditions at any time, including nights, weekends and holidays. The starting salary for full-time temporary is $6,044 per month. Hourlies are paid $27.79 an hour.

Applications for full-time temporary Winter Salaried Highway Maintainer and hourly Snow Removal Operator positions must be completed at https://illinois.jobs2web.com by Friday, Aug. 22, with additional job postings forthcoming. Once on the website, the easiest way to locate the posting is to type the county of preference in the search bar. As soon as a maintenance yard is full it will be removed from further postings, so it is beneficial to apply early to get your preferred location.

Applicants must have a Class A or B commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements to include X or N and no airbrake restrictions. A pre-employment physical and vision test as well as drug and alcohol screening and a criminal background check are required. Veterans are encouraged to apply.

Hires will be selected based on availability, experience, qualifications and location preference. For additional information, including positions available and the application process in specific districts, details on pay and potential for benefits, please click here
