I-474, Illinois 6 to return to normal configuration Oct. 8

PEORIA – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that traffic will be returned to normal configurations at the eastbound Interstate 474 and southbound Illinois 6 construction zone, just south of I-74 beginning Oct. 8.

This work is part of the larger I-474 bridge reconstruction project over Kickapoo Creek and the BNSF railroad. Crossovers will be removed for the winter, and westbound I-474 will remain in its current configuration. Work will continue in this area through November as bridge painting and crossover reconfiguration take place.

Work on the westbound I-474 span is expected to be complete in 2026.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide on 7,897 miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
