I-74 closure for pavement buckling repair
I-74 westbound between Carlock and Rivian Motorway to close today at noon for 2-3 hours
NORMAL – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that due to pavement buckling on Interstate 74 westbound between Carlock and Rivian Motorway, I-74 will close briefly just before the Carlock exit (mile marker 120).
The closure is expected to start at noon and last for two to three hours. A posted detour will include routing traffic onto Rivian Motorway (U.S. 150).
As the temperature and humidity increase, pavement will expand and if it runs out of room to expand, the pavement might buckle. Pavement failures typically occurs when prolonged high temperatures cause the road to expand and buckle or blow out, which results in uneven driving surfaces. It’s impossible to predict where or when failures may occur, but IDOT crews are monitoring the situation and are ready to respond. IDOT has the necessary staffing and materials in place to make repairs as quickly as possible.
We ask the public to stay alert and give our crews plenty of room to work. Pavement failures can be reported to IDOT by calling (800) 452-4368 or by reaching out to law enforcement by calling 911. We want to remind the public to remain alert to slowing traffic and move over and slow down for maintenance workers and other emergency personnel.
