VIOLA – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that lane closures along Illinois 17, about 4 miles east of Viola in Mercer County, will begin June 18.

The closures are necessary for box culvert and slope repairs, which are scheduled to be completed by August. Illinois 17 will be reduced to one lane, with traffic controlled by temporary signals.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
