Illinois 171 bridge repairs in Lockport begin Aug. 19

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that repairs to the bridge carrying Illinois 171 (State Street) over Fiddyment Creek (between New Avenue and Franklin Street), in Lockport, will begin, weather permitting, Tuesday, Aug. 19.

To complete the work, Illinois 171 will be reduced from two to one lane in both directions just before the bridge, with lane widths reduced to 10.5 feet. The public also should expect various lane shifts on both sides of Illinois 171 approaching the bridge throughout the project.

The $1.3 million project, which consists of repairing the bridge deck, approaches, installing a new deck overlay, replacing the existing median, expansion joints and curbs, is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide on 7,897 miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
