UPDATE: Illinois 53 weekend closures

To resurface the express lanes portion of Illinois 53, from Interstate 90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) to south of Kirchoff Road, express lane full closures with all traffic routed through the local lanes are scheduled to take place from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting, the weekends of Sept. 5. Sept. 12, Sept. 19 and Sept. 26.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing improvements, milling and resurfacing on Illinois 53 will require ramp, lane closures from south of Kirchoff Road to south of Rand Road (U.S. 12), in Rolling Meadows, Palatine and Arlington Heights, beginning, weather permitting, Tuesday, Aug. 26.

At least two lanes in each direction will remain open during the daytime hours. The public also should expect additional overnight lane closures along with various intermittent ramp closures throughout the limits to accommodate resurfacing. Access to residences and businesses within the work zone will be maintained.

The $82.8 million project is scheduled to be completed in several stages and consists of reconstructing and resurfacing the 6.4-mile stretch of Illinois 53, modernizing traffic signals, lighting and drainage improvements. The project also includes rehabilitating the Illinois 53 bridges over Kirchoff Road, Industrial Avenue, Northwest Highway (U. S. 14)/Union Pacific Railroad, Palatine Road and Anderson Drive.

Construction is anticipated to continue through mid-November, when Illinois 53 returns to three lanes in each direction. Work will resume next spring with the project wrapping up in 2027.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide on 7,897 miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
