Illinois 53 improvement project begins March 25
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that an improvement project on Illinois 53 from south of Kirchoff Road to south of Rand Road (U.S. 12), in Rolling Meadows, Palatine and Arlington Heights, will begin, weather permitting, the evening of Tuesday, March 25.
To safely establish the more than six miles of work zone, various overnight lane closures are scheduled to take place, between 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. in both directions of Illinois 53 from south of Kirchoff Road to south of Rand Road. At least one lane in each direction will remain open. The work zone is anticipated to be established by, weather permitting, Tuesday, April 1.
Throughout construction, Illinois 53 will remain three lanes in both directions. Motorists can expect various lane shifts and occasional overnight closures.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
The $82.8 million project is scheduled to be completed in several stages and consists of reconstructing and resurfacing the 6.4-mile stretch of Illinois 53, modernizing traffic signals, lighting and drainage improvements. The project also includes rehabilitating the Illinois 53 bridges over Kirchoff Road, Industrial Avenue, Northwest Highway (U. S. 14)/Union Pacific Railroad, Palatine Road and Anderson Drive.
The overall project is anticipated to be completed late 2026.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Five of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges and 986 additional safety improvements.
