Improvements at the Cumberland Road railroad crossing in St. Elmo begins Aug. 25

EFFINGHAM – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that Cumberland Road (U.S. 40) in St. Elmo will close for improvements and repairs at the railroad crossing. Work will begin Monday, Aug. 25 and is scheduled to be completed on Wednesday, Aug 27.

The closure is necessary to allow Union Pacific to repair and improve its crossing. A detour utilizing Main Street, Fourth Street and Spring Street will be in place.

It will be necessary for motorists to find an alternate route. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
