Improvements at the First Street railroad crossing in Fairfield underway

EFFINGHAM – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that First Street (U.S. 45) in Fairfield is closed for improvements and repairs at the railroad crossing. Work has begun and is scheduled to be completed at the end of the week.

The closure is necessary to allow Norfolk Southern Railway to repair and improve its crossing. A detour utilizing King Street, SW Fourth Street and Highland Avenue will be in place.

It will be necessary for motorists to find an alternate route. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
