Kennedy reversible express lanes to close over two consecutive weekends

Travel delays anticipated, alternative routes and public transit encouraged

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding the public that as part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94), from the Edens Expressway (Interstate 94) junction to Ohio Street, the reversible express lanes are scheduled to close, weather permitting, over the following two consecutive weekends.

  • 10 p.m. Friday, May 9, to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10.
  • 6 a.m., to noon Saturday, May 17, and from 6 a.m. to noon Sunday, May 18.

The closures are necessary to safely relocate existing fiber lines to prepare for future installation of new overhead sign structures and signs at Kedzie and Belmont avenues.

All scheduled work is subject to change due to multiple factors, including inclement weather. In that event, schedules will be updated and shared with the public.

Heavy congestion is anticipated. The public should expect significant delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Throughout construction, traveling during non-peak hours, taking alternative routes and utilizing public transportation, including the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line and Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line, as well as Pace, are recommended.
