LaGrange Road and 55th Street lane closures begin Aug. 5
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that an improvement project at the intersection of LaGrange Road (U.S. 12/20/45) and 55th Street, in Countryside, will require lane closures beginning, weather permitting, Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Throughout construction, at least one lane in each direction will remain open with various lane shifts on LaGrange Road and on 55th Street. Due to the narrow width of the intersection during construction, vehicles more than 40 feet long will be prohibited to make turns at the intersection. Detours will be posted.
The $16.9 million project is reconstructing and widening the intersection, installing new modernized traffic signals and LED lights and constructing new sidewalks with ADA-compliant ramps as well as drainage improvements.
Advance work started earlier this year by building temporary pavement and other site needs to keep the roads open throughout construction. The project is expected to be completed in late 2027.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
