Northbound I-55 near I-80 lane changes
CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild the Interstate 80 bridge over Interstate 55, in Joliet, Channahon and Shorewood, a stage change is scheduled to take place on northbound Interstate 55 near I-80.
To facilitate the stage change, starting at 8 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, March 12, lane closures will take place on the northbound lanes of I-55, between U.S. 6 and I-80. At least one northbound lane will remain open and southbound I-55 will not be impacted. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday, when the new traffic pattern will be in place.
In the new configuration, northbound I-55 will be shifted slightly to the right at I-80, the shoulders will be closed.
As the I-80 reconstruction continues, the public should continue to expect lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays and to allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
