Overnight lane closure on eastbound I-80 over I-55

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that pavement repairs on eastbound Interstate 80 over Interstate 55, in Joliet and Channahon, will require an overnight lane closure, weather permitting, Monday, Dec. 30.

Starting at 8 p.m. tonight, the right lane on eastbound I-80 over I-55 will be closed to accommodate needed repairs. Additionally, the eastbound I-80 ramp to northbound I-55 and the southbound I-55 ramp to eastbound I-80 will close at 11 p.m.

Ramp detours

  • Eastbound I-80 to northbound I-55: continue eastbound to Houbolt Road, exit Houbolt Road north, reenter westbound I-80 to exit northbound I-55.
  • Southbound I-55 to eastbound I-80: continue southbound to U.S. 6, exit U.S. 6 east, reenter northbound I-55 to exit eastbound I-80.

The work is anticipated to be completed and the lane and ramps reopened by approximately 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31. However, due to the projected temperatures it may take more time for the concrete to set and gain sufficient strength before the lane and ramps can be reopened to traffic. Westbound I-80 will not be impacted.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
