Overnight, weekend lane closures on Illinois 53

Major travel delays are anticipated – alternate routes are strongly encouraged

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of an ongoing improvement project on Illinois 53 in Rolling Meadows, Palatine and Arlington Heights, milling and resurfacing will require lane closures in both directions of Illinois 53 between Dundee (Illinois 68) and Palatine roads starting at, weather permitting, 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22.

At least one lane will remain open in each direction. The ramps will not be impacted.

The overall $189 million project is scheduled to be completed in several stages and consists of reconstructing and resurfacing Illinois 53 from Interstate 90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) to Lake Cook Road, modernizing traffic signals, along with lighting and drainage improvements. The project also is rehabilitating the following Illinois 53 bridges: Kirchoff Road, Industrial Avenue, Northwest Highway (U.S. 14)/Union Pacific railroad, Palatine Road, Anderson Drive, Rand Road, Salt Creek and Algonquin Road (Illinois 62).

Construction is anticipated to continue through late November, when Illinois 53 returns to three lanes in each direction. Work will resume next spring with the project wrapping up in 2027.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide on 7,897 miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
