Rebuilding Peoria: Interstate projects highlight another historic construction season

Gov. Pritzker’s capital program modernizing infrastructure throughout region and Illinois

PEORIA – Entering one of its busiest construction seasons ever, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that major projects in the Peoria area are planned or underway, fueled by Gov. JB Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program. Ten major projects combined represent a total investment of nearly $249.5 million, improving safety and mobility while sustaining and creating good-paying jobs throughout the region.

“Rebuild Illinois is revitalizing communities and neighborhoods by investing in projects and people in the Peoria area and throughout the state,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Through the largest capital program in state history, IDOT will be delivering improvements to build a more resilient, accessible and equitable system of transportation for generations to come, while creating jobs and enhancing local quality of life.”

Of the 10 major projects in the Peoria area, seven are scheduled to be completed in 2024 and the remaining three are anticipated to be completed in 2025.

  • Illinois 8/116 Cedar Street extension includes bridge rehabilitation, patching and resurfacing. The project is the first of three adjacent, related projects that began in the spring. Majority of the work is anticipated to be completed in November with minor items going into 2025. One lane will remain open in both directions.
  • Interstate 155 over Indian Creek bridge replacement project began in 2023 and is anticipated to be completed this fall. Crossovers and one lane traffic are in both directions on the northbound lane.
  • Eastbound McClugage Bridge (U.S. 150) replacement began in 2019 and is estimated to open this October, with demolition of the existing eastbound bridge to begin immediately after and finish in spring of 2025. Illinois 29 is one lane from Lorentz Avenue to Eureka Avenue with the ramp to eastbound U.S. 150 from northbound Illinois 29 closed. Access to eastbound U.S. 150 from northbound Illinois 29 is available via a different ramp.
  • Airport Road over I-474 bridge replacement began in March and is anticipated to be completed in late 2025. There will be one lane of traffic in both directions with crossovers. On I-474, one lane is open westbound and two lanes open eastbound with all ramps remaining open.
  • I-74 from north of U.S. 34 to Woodhull includes resurfacing, pavement markings, drainage work and seeding. The project began in 2023 and is anticipated to be completed in October. Expect intermittent daytime lane closures.

The project started in April and is anticipated to be completed in September. Expect single lane traffic across the bridge operated by signals.
  • Illinois 8 over the west fork of Kickapoo Creek, half mile east of Oak Hill bridge replacement began in March and is anticipated to be completed in November. The road is closed with a detour.
  • Illinois 17/91 over Spoon River bridge replacement project began in May and is anticipated to be completed in late 2025. Expect single lane traffic across the bridge.
  • Lincoln Avenue and Howett Street from Griswold Street to Adams Street in Peoria includes resurfacing and chip sealing. The project is anticipated to begin in June and to be completed in late July. Expect increased travel times in the work zone.

Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing a total of $33.2 billion over six years into the state’s aging transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history, but also the first that touches all modes of transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.

Accomplishments through March 31 of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $14.8 billion of improvements statewide on 6,078 miles of highways, 629 bridges and 895 additional safety improvements. “Under Gov. Pritzker, IDOT continues to deliver projects in the Peoria area that strengthen the state’s entire multimodal system of transportation,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “If you are traveling anywhere in Illinois this construction season, you will be traveling through work zones. Put down the devices. Follow the signs. And when you see orange, slow down and save lives.”
