Southbound I-55 near I-80 lane changes

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild the Interstate 80 bridges over Interstate 55, in Joliet, Channahon and Shorewood, a lane closure will be required on southbound I-55 near I-80. The closure is necessary to accommodate replacement of the I-55 ramp to eastbound I-80 and the I-80 bridges over I-55.

To safely establish the work zone, starting at 9 p.m., weather permitting, Monday, March 31, lane closures will take place on the southbound lanes of I-55, between Jefferson Street (U.S. 52) and I-80. At least one southbound lane will remain open and northbound I-55 will not be impacted. The lanes that were closed overnight will reopen by 6 a.m. Tuesday, when the new traffic pattern will be in place.

In the new configuration, southbound I-55 will be shifted slightly to the right at I-80 and the shoulders will be closed.

As the I-80 reconstruction continues, the public should continue to expect lane shifts, overnight lane closures and significant delays and to allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
