Work at rail crossing at Big Island Road in Milan begins May 11
MILAN – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, work at the Iowa Interstate Railroad crossing at Big Island Road in Milan will begin Monday, May 11.
Work will remove and replace the at-grade crossing and install new signals. Traffic will be able to bypass the crossing using a one-lane temporary runaround controlled by temporary signals. The runaround will be completely closed from midnight to 4 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, to allow the railroad to raise the entire track through the crossing. The project is anticipated to be completed in a week.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
