Work on Interstate 55 in Montgomery and Macoupin counties begins June 24

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that a 5.5-mile resurfacing project on Interstate 55 in Montgomery County and a pavement patching project in Macoupin and Montgomery counties will begin Monday, June 24. The resurfacing begins at the Sangamon County line and ends south of the Farmersville interchange (exit 72). The pavement patching begins just north of the Illinois 108/Carlinville interchange (exit 60) and ends at the Madison County line.

Work on both projects will take place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday night to Friday morning. Additional work on the resurfacing project includes culvert and inlet repairs, new pavement markings and shoulder preservation. Benefits to the public include an improved driving surface and drainage. The pavement patching is expected to be completed in mid-July, and the resurfacing is expected to be completed in mid-September.

Motorists can expect lane closures on the interstate and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,000 miles of highway and nearly 10 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Four of Rebuild Illinois included approximately $12.1 billion of improvements statewide on 5,339 miles of highway, 533 bridges and 762 additional safety improvements.
